Best of Janis Ian: The Autobiography Collection Review

by Steve Leggett

This two-disc set duplicates 2008’s release of the same name from Rude Girl Records, right down to the cover art. That original release was in itself a complement to the autobiography, Society’s Child, which Janis Ian published the same year, and contained the songs and performances that Ian specifically mentioned in her book. The result is a slightly different sort of “greatest-hits” collection, and while her most famous songs are here, including “Society’s Child (Baby I’ve Been Thinking),” “Jesse,” and “At Seventeen” (which appears in both the single and album version), the balance of these two discs has a more personal agenda, with plenty of live performances and demos represented. It’s actually a pretty revelatory set, adding up to a sort of intimate self-portrait of Ian's career.
