Ralph Irizarry's group, Timbalaye, deserves much greater recognition. The musicians (trumpeter Alex Norris, trombonist Ozzie Melendez, tenor-saxophonist Bob Franceschini, pianist Luis Perdomo, electric bassist Waldo Chavez, Roberto Quintero on congas and bongos, and Irizarry on timbales) are all expert ensemble players and colorful soloists. The nine originals on this CD are quite jazz-oriented and modern, with the Latin rhythm section really pushing the lead voices. This set does not have any slow moments and is full of stirring Afro-Cuban rhythms. A gem.
