The first thing to say is that Perfec is not perfect, and his debut album is far from the best-kept secret in hip-hop. Although he stands out among some of the other hardcore rappers from California, he just can't compete lyrically on a level like many of the better lyricists from the East. At only 21 years old, he still has plenty of time to prove himself. That said, what listeners have here is an album of mixed quality. Perfec aims at being a storyteller on a good number of the tracks. On a few, he succeeds at weaving an interesting tale, but doesn't manage to keep things going throughout a whole song. Other offerings see him rapping about his lifestyle in sunny Cali and the typical rap topics -- girls, money, drugs, and guns. When the dust clears, Best Kept Secret should probably remain one.
