Best Disco Album in the Universe, Vol. 2 Review

by Andy Kellman

Disco, like most pop music forms, thrived in the singles format. Many of the style's best songs were issued as stand-alone releases, not on single-artist albums. The Best Disco Album in the Universe, while quite a hyperbolic title (after all, that means it must be better than The Best Disco Album in the World), is also a confounding one, since it's actually an 11-volume set sold in individual installments. None of the 11 discs can be considered the best in the universe, but when you put them all together, you have an extensive and decent body that covers platinum smashes as well as enduring underground favorites. The second volume of the series features Evelyn "Champagne" King's "I'm in Love," Sylvester's "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)," the O'Jays' "Message in Our Music," Chaka Khan's "I'm Every Woman," and Sister Sledge's "He's the Greatest Dancer."
