This debut album from multi-instrumentalist Rara Avis is made up of a cornucopia of musical styles. BENEATH THE RADAR combines spoken word with trance drum beats, distorted guitar sounds, and lots of earthy tribal rhythms. The end result is a vast musical jungle of colors and textures.
One of the most interesting tracks on BENEATH THE RADAR is the penultimate piece "Celebration." This tune fuses techno with exotic Eastern flute meanderings and washy keyboards. An earlier work, "1000 Suns" is quite mystical. Here, Avis uses the sun as a metaphor for time and inner light. With "Law of the Land" Avis affirms music's life-giving powers. Overall, BENEATH THE RADAR is a unique blend of computer driven technology (the rave and electronica elements) with time-honored rock beats and touches of old-school funk. The spoken word aspects of this release focus on the mysterious, the sensual, and above all else, the spiritual.
