Representing some of the most non-socially redeeming "straight-up ghetto sh*t" to ever come out of Detroit, the sounds of DJ Assault and his partner, Mr. De', are well represented on this release. The first album of this two-record set features the duo's brand of potent gangster rap, which merges the violent egomania of NWA with the pornographic sexism of 2 Live Crew. The second album features a 38-track mix consisting exclusively of the booty/ghettotech anthems produced by the popular Detroit duo. After experiencing the two very different albums it becomes apparent that Assault and De' should stick to producing beats and their booty anthems or else continue to sharpen their rapping skills. Though the ghetto duo do an admirable job of laying rhymes over their hip-hop beats on this, their first attempt at rap, their lack of noteworthy lyrical content becomes stale after the jokes and attitude get old. On the other hand, the accompanying mix CD illustrates exactly why this duo rose to such prominence so quickly. Flying through one pitched-up booty-shakin' track after the next, Assault moves through his most revered classics -- "Ass N' Titties," "Sex on the Beach," "Dick By the Pound" -- while still managing to make the mix flow smoothly. The second disc of this album is a perfect place for newcomers to get a quick education in not only Assault's late '90s canon but also in his quick mixing style. Look for the Mo Wax re-release, which conveniently removes the rap disc, leaving only the mix disc.
