AllMusic Review by

A three-disc box set that features a disc each for English, Celtic, and American folk artists, Beginner's Guide to Folk Music makes a pleasant listen, the kind of thing you might want to put on the player while cleaning the house on a Sunday morning. Highlights include Richard Thompson's "One Door Opens" and Norma Waterson's "Black Muddy River" from the English disc, Bert Jansch's "Born and Bred in Old Ireland" from the Celtic volume, and Clarence Ashley and Doc Watson's version of "The Coo-Coo Bird" on the American disc. Malvina Reynolds' fragile rendition of "What Have They Done to the Rain" is another delight.
