The second of six Xanadu LPs to reissue obscure bop sessions from the mid-'40s to mid-'50s has four interesting dates from very early in the bebop era. Bassist Oscar Pettiford leads a large band for four selections, three of which feature the so-so singer Rubberlegs Williams. However trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie's presence in this Jan. 1945 session gives it great historic value. In addition there are four selections apiece from groups led by trombonists Kai Winding (with a no-name septet) and J.J. Johnson (with a variety of Count Basie sidemen including tenorman Buddy Tate) and a quintet set by vibraphonist Terry Gibbs with clarinetist Aaron Sachs. This is historic and enjoyable music.
