This debut record of Mel Martin's Bebop and Beyond is a very impressive effort so it is surprising that six years would pass before their first encore. Martin (playing tenor and soprano) teams up wih the great altoist John Handy, trumpeter Warren Gale, pianist George Gables, bassist Frank Tusa and drummer Eddie Marshall for four group originals, Tadd Dameron's "On a Misty Night" and two Thelonious Monk songs. The exciting "Longhorn" (dedicated to Art Blakey) and Monk's "Evidence" are among the highpoints of this inventive straightahead set. Recommended.
