The emergence of garage rock and its Neanderthal drumming galvanized Sandy Nelson, who was attacking his kit with feral abandon while the post-Beatles generation was still in short-pants. Though another in Nelson's seemingly endless series of covers records, Beat That #!!@* Drum is a notch above the norm thanks to an excellent selection of material featuring a number of protean garage stompers that afford the drummer a chance to cut loose. Nelson tackles songs like the Troggs' "Wild Thing," Tommy James' "Hanky Panky," and the Yardbirds' "Over Under Sideways Down" with an urgency often absent from his mid-'60s dates, and it's a pleasure to hear him regain his form. Best of all, Beat That #!!@* Drum includes Nelson's rendition of the Ventures' "Wipeout," arguably the quintessential rock & roll drum showcase.
