Be My Baby: The Girls of the Sixties Review

by Steve Leggett

A 70-track set of hits from female pop singers of the 1960s and early '70s, this generous package includes classic girl group sides like the Ronettes' "Be My Baby" and the Crystals' "Then He Kissed Me," and certainly most of the selections collected here are from girl groups, but the net is cast just a little bit wider than that as well, and includes sides like country singer Lynn Anderson's "Rose Garden" and Janis Joplin's "Me and Bobby McGee." The end result is a fun listen, if not exactly an exhaustive survey of the era.
