This 3-CD set could be fairly accurately described as Lee Perry versus Prince Jammy, with a little I-Roy thrown into the mix. The Perry portions of the set, particularly the bloodcurdling "Hold on Death," are heavy on thunderous drum echo and gut-rattling bass. However, the crazy-like-a-fox dub warrior never lets studio effects get in the way of the rhythm, building each track on a solid foundation before deconstructing it in a tsunami of echo. Jammy, who is heard here before his mid-1980s electronic ragga heyday, favors a more ambient approach to the mixing desk; for example, on "Bad Girls Dub," the song's central theme appears through a mist of reverb before asserting itself. Meanwhile, the rhythm section of Sly & Robbie (who also appear on some of the Lee Perry cuts) somehow sounds lighter than when filtered through Perry's screwball sonic sensibilities.
