The name "Batimco" is an abbreviation for the percussive instruments bata, timbale and congas and is essentially a fine Latin-jazz sextet. Jorge Sylvester and Marti Cuevas take many fine saxophone solos, pianist Glenn Pearson leads the strong rhythm section and David Frazier's percussion (which gives the group a bit of an identity) is consistently colorful. The group utilizes funky rhythms and post-Coltrane improvising much more than Tito Puente and Poncho Sanchez but fans of those groups should enjoy this band (even with its lack of brass instruments) for Batimco is expert at setting grooves that inspire the soloists, performing modern hard bop with a Latin feel.
