Basic Concept is a recording that proves the value of hard work. The second full-length album from Montreal's Local Rabbits implements a matured and polished approach to music making and for this quirky, swaggering all-male alternative pop quartet, it also signals a step up in their craft. The overall sound is clean and crisp with subtle touches of 70's retro-pop. "Play On" and "Keep It Down" exemplify a kind of stylish indie-rock that's melody-driven and more mainstream than the songs on their 1996 debut, You Can't Touch This. Horns, strings, piano and lavish guitar solos highlight most tracks, in particular "Stomp Your British Knights Down." With a sprinkling of pop, blues and country twang, Local Rabbits offer something just a little bit different from the rest of the pack.
