Balloon was the first of Catherine Wheel's EPs to demonstrate that the shoegaze tag from the press was limiting, as the title track and "Intravenous" are heavenly slices of joyous, pure pop. Two tracks recorded at a show at Bath's Moles club in late 1991 ("Let Me Down Again" and "Painful Thing") reveal a band that's always been at the top of the heap in concert. Definitely worth seeking out.
