The Balinese Barong & Keris dance is about the fight between good and evil. The Barong is a mythical protective lion that represents good and that has to fight against the forces of evil in the form of a witch called Rangda. It is said that during the dance some people fall into trance and perform a stabbing dance with a dagger. If they do not hurt themselves, it is believed that they are protected by their trance state. The gamelan ensemble accompanying the dance is usually small and composed of few drums, cymbals, metallophones, kettles, and gongs. Entrancing music as only Balinese know how to make it.
