Back to Basics Review

by Dean Carlson

Danny Tenaglia was the first in line for Back to Basics' fledgling compilation series, bringing with him immediate name recognition but offering one of the more troubled and spiritless dance mixes of 2002. Perhaps the overall premise was the real problem, a desperate expression of the lapsing tenets of vaguely funky progressive house with neither the infectious genre veneration which can elevate a sagging set list or an identifiable sign of scene renaissance. At times, Tenaglia's tastes commanded one's attention, not least when they took him into places dark and electro and nastily tribal, but the mix failed on too many levels to remind audiences why Back to Basics had become a household name.
