K-Tel's Back to Back featuring five songs apiece from the Turtles and the Grassroots seems like a good collection. For a change, the two bands have a similar and complementary sound as both were started as folk-rockers and bloomed into great pop bands. The Turtles' five tracks contain their biggest hits: "Happy Together" and "Elenore" as well as their early cover of Bob Dylan's "It Ain't Me" and their wonderful folk-pop gem "You Baby." So far so good. The problems start with the opening notes of the Grassroots' garage folk classic "Let's Live for Today" when you realize with a start that the track is a re-recording. All their songs here are bland and faceless new versions of their classics. What a pity because if it included the originals this would have served as a fine introduction to two really great bands. As it is, this edition of Back to Back is a travesty that should be avoided like the plague.
