K-Tel's Back to Back series is in theory a pretty good idea. Take two bands or artists, select their five best songs, and end up with two mini-"best of" collections on one disc. In practice, the series often falls flat due to an incongruous pairing of artists, or in the case of the Association/Turtles disc, the use of re-recorded versions of the band's songs. All five of the Association's tracks are modern recordings and they are among the worst you are liable to hear. The music is stiff and bland and the vocals are embarrassingly weak as the singers struggle to hit notes and reach harmonies. It is hard to believe anyone involved with these recordings was also involved in the originals. The Turtles as of 2004 haven't fallen victim to the re-recording virus. All five of their songs here are originals. It isn't enough to save the disc from being a pathetic attempt to fool people into buying something they really don't want or expect. Keep your eyes open when buying K-Tel collections.
