Shalamar had a handful of hits for Solar Records in the late '70s and early '80s, including the number one R&B hit, "The Second Time Around." Their post-disco funk and urban soul is a good match for the Sylvers' infectious disco on this edition of Back 2 Back Hits. Shalamar's five songs include "The Second Time Around," of course, plus the lesser hits "I Can Make You Feel Good," "I Owe You One," "This Is for the Lover in You" and "Ooh Baby, Baby." It would have been nice if it concentrated more on bigger hits, but the result is still entertaining. The Sylvers' portion is a little more consistent, since it contains three of their four R&B Top Ten hits -- "Hot Line," "Boogie Fever" and "High School Dance" -- plus a pair of lesser hits, "Cotton Candy" and "Any Way You Want Me." It's a good overview of their most popular -- and best -- recordings, and it helps make this volume of Back 2 Back Hits a good bargain for budget-minded casual fans of either group.
