Back in the Box is the only David Byrne EP other than the increasingly rare Forestry to function as more than a two- or three-track single release, and is the only official CD to contain any of Byrne's stirring live recordings. There are at least two superfluous tweakings of "Back in the Box," but the textures of the myriad remix tracks function decently enough as segues between the three selections really worth hearing. Crystal Waters' "Gypsy Woman" gets a highly unlikely work over in Byrne's hands as a minor-key rock song that actually burns away the pretension and camp from the original version. Meanwhile, with "Cool Water," Byrne revisits a Talking Heads gem from their 1988 swan song from Naked, to transcendent effect. The third track is an esoteric found sound piece called "A Woman's Secret" that recalls his Eno and Tharp collaborations from the early '80s.
