The production may be way too slick, but on Autumn Sweet, d Henry Fenton proves he knows his Americana. He's John Mellencamp and Bruce Springsteen combined in one poppy, country-tinged singer/songwriter. Cuts like "Autumn Sweet" jangle along through the amber waves of grain with a rootsy momentum and nostalgic glaze. But Ryan Adams he is not -- d Henry Fenton is better suited to fans of '70s Southern rock than to alternative country listeners. "I'm Not Ready for You" might have a great vibe, but in order to break out of the adult contemporary and bar band scenes, Fenton would do well to give some of his tunes a grittier, lo-fi treatment.
