During 1951-1954, trumpeter Buck Clayton and pianist Joe Bushkin had a regular engagement at the Embers in New York. Their brand of small-group swing was both melodic and swinging, and it was apparently a very happy situation for everyone involved. This set of well-recorded performances, with bassist Milt Hinton and drummer Jo Jones completing the quartet, was previously unreleased when it came out on a 2006 CD. Clayton and the group perform six selections plus three medleys. While all of the songs are familiar, the music is full of subtle surprises that bring out the best in the players. This pleasing program is easily recommended.
