On the evidence of the first couple of tracks of their full length debut, the California garage rockers have all the elements in place to become the left coast Strokes, or, on "Call in the Cavalry," even America's answer to the Arctic Monkeys. But as ASTORIA progresses, it's obvious the Shys have a deeper musical heritage to draw on than their 21st-century bedhead brethren. "Waiting on the Sun" conjures the Black Crowes' Stones-like sway, while "Having It Large" displays more than a passing acquaintance with '70s rockers like the Faces and the Stooges, and the subtle, layered "Resistance" would be classic rock & roll in any era.
