Wilco fans and those curious about the touring rock band lifestyle are well-served by the 88-minute Ashes, a DVD film co-directed by Fugazi drummer Brendan Canty that takes you on the road in 2008 with Wilco though the American south. It is mixed exceptionally well, with shot concert performances in historic locales such as Nashville's Ryman Auditorium (of old Grand Ole Opry fame), Tulsa's Cain's Ballroom (1977 Sex Pistols, anyone?), and New Orleans' mainstay, Tipitina's, with scenes of off-stage life, in the bus, at sound check, in eateries, and dealing with fans and each other. Not the usual hoary genre fare, it's the most revealing documentary since Death Cab for Cutie's similar Drive Well, Sleep Carefully. (And if you want to hear a complete concert, there's a download of the D.C. 9:30 Club show.)
