Although often overlooked, clarinetist Rolf Kuhn's clear tone, obvious virtuosity and creative ideas keep his music consistently stimulating. Rolf's brother, pianist Joachim, takes a strong supportive role on this trio date, while bassist Detlev Beier is also excellent. The group utilizes complex originals, fairly free group improvisational sections, and its own individual sense of swing to make the program memorable. The main performance is the nearly 20-minute "Spontaneous Construction," a multi-sectioned work full of surprising mood and tempo changes. The brief but pretty "When I Fall In Love" features the leader's unaccompanied clarinet, while Rolf Kuhn's "Well I Didn't" has a much freer approach before resolving into "When I Fall In Love." "Speed Of Speech" is notable for the use of some electronic devices that allow Rolf to state chords. Throughout the date (which also includes two other pieces), the interplay between the three musicians on the unpredictable music is quite impressive.
