AllMusic Review by

This set contains the A and B sides (as referenced in the album title) of most of Family's single releases. Family traveled an incredible distance over the four years covered here, 1969 to 1973 (a time period that also covers the public lifespan of the band). There are powerful, flat-out rockers ("Boom Bang"), boozy jams ("Sweet Desiree"), and even folkish balladry ("My Friend The Sun"). While Family charted in their native United Kingdom, they never cracked the American market--which, unfortunately, left them in an untenable business situation. Roger Chapman's impassioned sandpaper vocals, wedded to guitarist Charlie Whitney's pop smarts made for an arresting songwriting and performing duo, and when the pair disbanded Family (and went on to form Streetwalkers) they left a legacy of superb albums. This set of singles is a fine place to start exploring this outstanding band.
