Arrears is a five-part suite of free improvisations recorded live in Germany, documenting spirited musical conversation among Frank Gratkowski on alto sax and clarinet, Georg Graewe on piano, and John Lindberg on bass. Their pace varies widely, from the pregnant silences and spooky contrabass clarinet textures of "Arrears III" to the more anxious, jumbled interplay of "Arrears IV." (There are moments during "Arrears II" when you could swear they're hinting at the melodic outline of "Body and Soul." They're probably not.) Each movement evolves through multiple stages, never settling into tempo, always maintaining an aura of suspense and non-resolution.
