AllMusic Review by

Haut-Karabagh is a compilation that aims to present the plight of the people of Upper Karabagh, a territory that proclaimed itself linked to Armenia and a separate republic from Azerbaijan in 1991 and has endured much warfare since. To present the inhumanity of war -- or possibly to firmly side, politically, with Upper Karabagh, and to put faces to the problem by matching voices to it -- this compilation is filled with weighty, affecting recordings that capture the vulnerable humanity of the residents and the contrast between sanity and their current quality of life. The recordings include that of a wailing cemetery on the Day of the Dead, a 10-year-old singing with heavy shelling in the background, and fight songs (some sung by schoolchildren).
