Antologia Noble del Bolero Review

by John Bush

The five-disc box set Antologia Noble del Bolero collects more examples of the form than have ever been seen in one package. Present are all of the greatest bolero singers at mid-century, including Daniel Santos, Julio Jaramillo, Olimpo Cardenas, Blanca Rosa Gil, and Olga Guillot. Also in attendance are great boleros from those less associated with the form, such as Beny Moré, Celia Cruz, and even Nat King Cole. Sprinkle in delicious tracks from a few of the best trios (los Panchos, los Tres Reyes), add dozens of appearances from lesser lights (Lucho Gatica, Felipe Pirela, Alberto Beltran), and Antologia Noble del Bolero begins to become one of the best wrap-ups available (granted the fact that excellent Latin compilations are hard to come by). A few caveats do present themselves, however. The sound varies widely, and the best source for audio quality is rarely used. Also, the compilers used little evident rhyme or reason in selecting an order, which leaves songs from different decades striking an odd note when placed right next to each other.
