AllMusic Review by

One of the main particularities of Balinese gamelan music is that it is a type of "collective music"; that is to say, melodies and rhythms are so intertwined and dependent upon each other that, if played separately, one loses the quality and spirit of that music. Although an island of small size, the Balinese have created a large variety of typical musical styles, repertoires, and types of ensembles, each type having its own style and repertoire. Some of the ensembles used mainly metal instruments (generally in bronze), while others use only bamboo instruments. This double album gives an excellent idea of what gamelan music is, as well as the different styles and ensembles found on the island. This is the Balinese musical imagination at its best.
