Another Time Review

by Scott Yanow

Trumpeter Bobby Lewis' sixth album for the Southport label features him primarily on flügelhorn, switching to trumpet and cornet for one track apiece. Lewis, who takes a couple effective vocals on "You Stepped Out of a Dream" and "A Felicidade," is in superior form throughout. The instrumentation varies, with saxophonist Pat Mallinger being on five of the 11 selections, drums being absent on four numbers, "Don't Worry 'Bout Me" featuring several overdubbed flügelhorns, and the three-part "Happenstance" being a free improvisation by the trio of Lewis, Mallinger, and percussionist Alejo Poveda. Lewis, who has a mellow tone and a swinging style, is creative within the genres of hard bop and cool jazz, and has long been one of Chicago's best trumpeter/flügelhornists. Another Time is a fine example of his talents.
