On this set, pianist Franck Amsallem sometimes is quite reminiscent of Bill Evans, an association that is reinforced by his interplay with one of Evans' former sidemen (bassist Gary Peacock) and drummer Bill Stewart. However, Amsallem is often more advanced in an introspective way, coming up with fresh ideas, particularly on the original ballads. The Evans influence is most deeply felt during the more swinging sections and in the communication between the musicians. Franck Amsallem, who has thus far succeeded in remaining quite obscure, deserves much greater recognition. This is a fine place to start in exploring his music.
