Though Royal Wade Kimes had earned quite a reputation as a professional songwriter before he became a recording artists, he wasn't able to come up with a set of winning material for his debut album, Another Man's Sky. Kimes does show some spark and vigor over the coruse of the album, but the record is bogged down by uneven material. Furthermore, he sounds more like a songwriter than a performer -- he may deliver these songs with a gravelly conviction, but he doesn't quite know how to turn these songs into great performances. Another Man's Sky shows promise -- and the best of his songs are very good -- but Kimes needs to distinguish himself more as a performer before he can be truly memorable.
