Anxious to avoid the downbeat pigeonhole, the Another Late Night series inaugurated another title, Another Fine Mess, to play the preclub buildup yang to the regular series' postclub comedown yin. FC Kahuna, as intelligent a dance production act as could be found in the early 2000s, obliged with a hearty mix of grooving electro and indie-dance. The duo may admit to a few fine messes on this volume, but from a listener's viewpoint there's really no need to worry -- they fix it all in this mix, hitting on many of the finest latter-day electro producers on the planet: the Juan Maclean, Daniel Wang, Green Velvet, David Holmes, Atom Heart, Christopher Just. Fine pacing and splendid decision-making illustrate how assured this duo is. Any team capable of moving from a rigid electro-pop cover of James Brown's "Superbad" directly into the fuzz-toned madness of Blur and on into a sublime miniset of trance-state techno obviously has spent much time behind the decks. Any night that begins with such a kinetic, eclectic, completely delicious mix as this is in serious danger of a future anticlimax.
