AllMusic Review by

Bernard Herrmann's deft, Oscar-nominated score for the 1946 John Cromwell-directed film, Anna and the King of Siam, predates the Rodgers & Hammerstein stage musical, The King and I, by five years. Preserved in its entirety and recorded on Fox's new multi-channel sound stage (designed by Alfred Newman), the soundtrack features Eastern scales and melodic percussion to convey Herrmann's Western orchestral version of an Englishwoman's life in the Far East. This 51-track Varese Sarabande release was digitally remastered by Dan Hersch and includes liner notes by screen-music writer Jon Burlingame.
