Big World is comprised of pianist Rick Helzer, Bill Plake on tenor, soprano, and flutes, and drummer-percussionist Jeanette Wrate. On this intriguing set, the bassless trio performs seven originals including an abstract tribute to Charles Mingus ("Mingus in Watercolor"), "Blue Sphere" (a tribute to Thelonious Monk that sounds a little like "Misterioso"), a couple numbers utilizing Wrate's voice, and the beautiful spiritual ballad "Man of Sorrow, Son of Redemption." Quite often the group breaks down into duets and solos, and overall the music is quite thoughtful yet pretty spontaneous. Obviously these musicians had worked a great deal together, for they often think as one. Intriguing music.
