Angel and the Dark River/Darkest Eyes Review

by Thom Jurek

Now this is how you do reissues: you not only remaster your original recording, but you add enough bonus material to fill the disc, and you make it all relevant in some chronological way to the release. Then you add a DVD of a rare but stellar live performance from the same era, and you add very special bonus material to the DVD. You present it all in an elegant package and offer it to fans at a price they can’t refuse. This is exactly what My Dying Bride has done on this fantastic remastered reissue of 1996’s The Angel and the Dark River. The sound is crystalline, heavy, and full of the ambience in the original recording session that couldn’t be captured by digital technology at the time, but was in the room at the time of recording. The bonus material on disc one includes three tracks form the infamous Dyanmo appearance in 1995, and the studio version of “The Sexuality of Bereavement.” The DVD, entitled "Darkest Eyes" contains a complete live concert shot during the Angel and the Dark River tour, in Krakow, Poland. Sound and visuals are excellent. In addition to the concert, the purchaser gets all the promotional videos the band shot up to that point in their career -- six in total -- and another chapter on the DVD for galleries and photos from early live gigs and the Dynamo show. It’s all offered in a beautiful package (would you expect anything less from MDB?) at an attractive price. Well done, and let this be an example to other acts planning on reissuing catalog titles!
