The fifth in Polyvinyl's short-lived series of CD singles, And His Baby Blue probably came as a big shock to anyone familiar with Sean Na-Na's (previously Tillman) previous work with the AmRep punk trio Calvin Krime. The three moody pop songs on this debut single are noticeably absent of Tillman's familiar tongue-in-cheek humor, resulting in a surprisingly mature, pensive sound. Not that the songs are weighty or depressing; the "My Favorite Things"-style catalog reminiscence of "Two of the Same Name" is dedicated to Mr. Na-Na's big sister as a wedding gift, and "Girls Girls Girls!" is an upbeat acoustic love song. Recorded in the hotbed of contemplative indie pop, Olymipa, WA, and abetted by Lois Maffeo's backing vocals and Phil Elvrum's production, And His Baby Blue makes for a great soundtrack to a nice, cloudy afternoon.
