This intriguing set features long improvisations by trumpeter Roy Campbell, bassist William Parker, and drummer Zen Matsuura on seven of Campbell's pieces. The musicians pay close attention to each other and keep the avant-garde music quite unpredictable yet moving forward and ultimately logical. Though Campbell is usually the lead voice, the other musicians play important roles in determining the direction of the music, offering constant commentary on Campbell's ideas. Each listen to these performances reveals more secrets and shows how well these three master players communicate with each other. A stimulating set.
