With the title An Introduction to Herbie Mann, the average consumer would naturally consider this to be a best-of collection. It isn't. This is actually a reissue of Fuel 2000's Afro-Jazziac Bop, which captures a 1958 recording featuring Machito & His Orchestra with Mann on flute, followed by a quintet session led by Mann and Buddy Collette a year earlier. While these 20 selections of Afro-Cuban jazz and hard bop are top-notch, if this were an actual introduction to Mann's music, it would have to include something from the flutist's Atlantic output from the '60s, like "Comin' Home Baby" or "Memphis Underground." Great music, confusing presentation.
