Hardcore purists may scoff, but the fact remains that trumpeter Al Hirt (1922-1999) lured many people to jazz in general and the music of New Orleans in particular with his jovial, user-friendly gumbo of jazz and pop styles. Hirt was indeed a fine, enthusiastic horn player who also happened to bestow upon a young Wynton Marsalis his very first trumpet. Hirt's approach encompassed Dixieland jazz (based on the classic New Orleans style of Louis Armstrong), big-band swing, and easygoing instrumental versions of pop hits, all spotlighting his gregarious skill on the horn. This excellent 16-track collection touches on all those points and more.
