The Hugo Masters comes in a silk-covered box containing notes and music on the gamut of Chinese classical music. This collection was put together by Aik Yew-goh. He was an Oriental Allan Lomax, capturing elder virtuosos. However, he used extremely high quality equipment. Most of the Chinese classical tradition ceased with the 1911 Chinese Revolution. Aik scoured for masters alive before the upheaval. The 4-CD set is broken up by instrumentation: bowed strings, plucked strings, woodwinds and percussion. The Percussion volume clangs and smashes with real vigor. My favored cut here has the apt title "Flying Dragons and Jumping Tigers." I can see just that! Several wooden barrel drums show up in the solo sections.
