German critic Joachim Berendt organized an all-star concert in early 1963 that featured a variety of American jazzmen who were living in Europe. The results were issued on two Impulse LPs and all of the music on the first volume (along with two selections from the second set) was reissued on a single CD by GRP/Impulse. Drummer Kenny Clarke leads a trio with organist Lou Bennett and guitarist Jimmy Grouley for two songs, trumpeter Idrees Sulieman is featured on "I Can't Get Started," clarinetist Bill Smith and altoist Herb Geller team up in a quintet for two of Smith's originals and the immortal pianist Bud Powell plays "'Round Midnight" with a trio. The bop-based music is consistently excellent, making the CD version easily recommended.
