The Chuck Wagon Gang has existed in one incarnation or another for the better part of a century, selling millions of records along the way. Their later efforts, as represented on this 18-track CD from 1989, are far removed from their country gospel roots and adhere to the kind of white gospel style that is frequently heard on television evangelists' programs. The sterile arrangements and characterless performances are technically accomplished but nearly devoid of uniqueness or novelty. Perhaps with these recordings the focus should be on the songs rather than the presentation, in which case the effort is a rousing success and probably thoroughly palatable to its devout audience, few of whom are likely to review music criticism. More critical-minded music lovers, on the other hand, will find the latter-day Chuck Wagon Gang to be bland in the extreme.
