AllMusic Review by Heather Phares

Alterna-Hits gathers hits by alternative rock en Español artists, including Aterciopelados' "El Album," La Ley's "El Duelo," and Juanes' "Para Ser Eterno." While tracks like I.K.V.'s funky "Jennifer del Estereo" and La GusanaCiega's "Tornasol (Vuelves a Ser)" still have close ties with more traditional Latin music, songs such as La Vela Puerca's "Alta Magia" and Molotov's "Rastaman-Dita" incorporate ska and punk, and Zurdok's "Estático" has hints of psychedelic pop. Rap and metal play a large part in alternative rock en Español, as proven by the churning angst of Resorte's "Aqui No Es Donde" and Dracma's "Chilenada." Other highlights include Control Machete's sly hip-hop track "Si Senor" (which was also featured in a Levi's jeans commercial in 2002) and Los Estramboticos' Pixies-esque "Cerveza y el Dolor." A fascinating if not comprehensive look at Latin rock, Alterna-Hits is a good introduction to the many sounds encompassed by this style.
