Though they attracted relatively little attention during the five years that they were releasing albums, Hypnolovewheel left behind an impressive body of work. ALTERED STATES was their fifth and final release, and it stands as a perfect companion to their previous title, ANGEL FOOD. Both are catchy sets of hyped-up, guitar-driven rock songs.
The band explores a similar sonic world to that of The Pixies, but with songs that revel more in the surreal. The guitars of Stephen Hunking and Dave Ramirez come pummeling across the landscape on ALTERED STATES, atop the incessant rhythm of bassist Dan Cuddy and drummer Peter Walsh. The band has at least one bona fide classic here with "Peace of Mind." Years from now, when people look back upon and celebrate the development of music in the '90s, this band might very well be paraded through town on its own float.
