This record by the Italian hard-bop cooperative most clearly resembles the music of such late-'50s American bands as the Miles Davis Quintet and the Jazz Messengers, right down to the requisite echo-chamber reverb. American drummer Joe Chambers guests with the group; he drives the music with a light touch and a nicely understated swing. Pianist Riccardo Zegna, saxophonist Pietro Tonolo, bassist P. Leveratto and trombonist Roberto Rossi are all solid players in a modern mainstream fashion. It's a rather dated sound, but the music's every bit as valid and well-played as any number of straightahead albums by better-known young U.S. players.
