Sammy Davis Jr.'s talent, virtuoso impressionism, wit, and musicality come to the fore in this splendid picture of his '50s career. He has the sense of rhythm and dynamic phrasing to make these tracks as exciting as a James Bond movie.
These songs are American standards, and Davis creates uniquely perfect readings, as on his beautiful treatment of the two pieces from "Porgy and Bess." Davis brings them the same clarity and meaning he did in the film version of the Gershwin folk-opera. "Just in Time" is given a riotous treatment via impersonations of some of the '50s great singers and personalities, such as Nat "King" Cole, Frank Sinatra, Al Hibbler, Billy Eckstine, Louis Armstrong, Jerry Lewis, and Fred Astaire.
