AllMusic Review by

The title Greatest Ellington is bit misleading. This is a 21-track compilation of many famous early compositions of Duke. The difference is that Ellington is not, per se, leading any of the groups, according to the credits. Most are medium-sized ensembles bordering on little big bands, fronted by Barney Bigard, Cootie Williams, Rex Stewart, Billy Taylor, and Jimmy Hamilton, along with big-band sides led by Johnny Hodges. It's certainly "All the Duke's Men," pure Ellingtonia, just packaged and marketed differently. The sessions all claim to be from 1936, and the sound transfer to digital is very good. Overall, an interesting novelty item for collectors.
